It's when I lived in a nice 2-bedroom, 2-bath house on the Gulf Coast of Florida, in a town named Port Charlotte. I guess you could liken the area to the surrounds of Townsville. Miami/Fort Lauderdale, Florida's equivalent to the Gold Coast, was on the other side of the state. This was the quieter, older-age-group Gulf of Mexico side, with a thin strip of modernity at the water's edge, backed by flat, swampy farmland that extended 150 K inland.

Goss got his reputation as the mayor of Sanibel Island, a barrier isle community with beautiful beaches, ritzy "view" houses, yacht clubs and tons of boutiquey places to shop. The area was infested with monied people who had moved out of the Midwest for retirement, and were right-wing as scared, change-resistant old folks often are.

He had a reputation as being fiscally intelligent, and when he ran the first time, he hinted in the press about how he had been involved in some shady CIA overthrow stuff during his spook days. That was enough to make him seem tough, a quality appreciated by semi-rich geezers and the pickup-driving construction worker class.

I never voted FOR him as a congressman, but I didn't vote AGAINST him either. That's because there were so few Democrats, and such a weak party organisation, that in 1996 and 1998, no one even challenged him. I mean, no names on the ballot to cast as protest vote for. IIRC, Goss wasn't on the ballot either, because the election officials didn't want to waste the space and ink when it was a foregone conclusion.Bukko Boomerangerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02424677168216647964noreply@blogger.com
