Killian AWOL Memos: a Karl Rove Plant?

There are increasing doubts about the authenticity of the Killian memos (see below). The criticism is based on the fact that 1972 style typewriters did not use proportional spacing, as modern computers do. This means that a type-written letter "i" on a computer takes up less space than an "m", for example.

CBS is sticking by its story, and says in any case that several un-named former colleagues of Killian assure them that the contents of the memos tie in with what he told them. That won't matter much if the US public writes off the whole AWOL issue as a Democrats lie.

If the memos are indeed forgeries, this dirty trick has Karl Rove's fingerprints all over it. As reported yesterday, it was strange indeed that the White House was supplying the press with copies of the memos and more or less vouching for their authenticity.

In news that may well be related (remembering that Joe Wilson blames Karl Rove for disclosing the identity of his undercover CIA wife, Valerie Plame), the federal prosecutor investigating the Plame case is now pursuing a second case involving the leak of plans to seize the assets of an Islamic charity suspected of providing funding to al Qaeda:
"The FBI believes that a call from a reporter to a representative of the charity, the Illinois-based Global Relief Foundation, may have led to the destruction of documents there the night before the government's raid, according to findings by the Sept. 11 commission. "

These are very murky waters indeed. Given the Bush-Saudi connections (famously revealed in Michael Moore's 911 film), such an investigation could go just about anywhere.

Here's a scenario to ponder: Bush-Cheney 04 wins the Nov 2 election, but half the administration - including Rove, Cheney, Rumsfeld and the neo-cons - are then arrested in a massive FBI sting. FBI agents presents evidence tying the entire group to an Israeli spy ring, revealing dozens of incidents of treasonable behaviour, corruption and worse. A subsequent enquiry proves - among other things - that Bush administration officials knew about the planning for 9/11 but did nothing to stop it.

Couldn't happen? Not if Karl Rove gets his way.
