Russian PM Vladimir Putin is ready to follow the USA's lead. Unfortunately, he's not moving towards "truth, justice and the American Way".
Instead, Putin is responding to the Chechen crisis by promising even harsher domestic laws, a la Patriot Act:
"We did not understand the complexity and the danger of the process which was emerging in our country and in the entire world," Putin told reporters.
"We did not know how to react in the appropriate fashion. We have shown weakness in the face of danger and the weak get beaten up...
We have not paid due attention to defence and security issues. We will, in the near future, take steps aimed at strengthening the unity of the country."
How will a Bush government be able to criticize Putin for a violent, repressive crackdown on civil rights, given their own draconian laws?
