Change We Can Believe In

Aside from all the politics, the election of a black President remains a positive. OF course that doesn't mean racism is dead in the USA, but we have come a long way...

Ah, those Maryland tobacco farmers! Washington County, where this took place, is on the western, Appalachian side of Maryland (the state where I was born.) It's more a hillbilly area than a Southern redneck place like the rest of the state. I could have seen that happening in the Chesapeake Bay region, but odd that it would have occurred on that side of the state.

I have an uncle and aunt on my mother's side who used to grow the killer weed in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. My folks sent me to spend a few weeks there during the summer when I was younger, so I could see what farming life was like. They had a small herd of cows, a chicken house, field crops, a hay barn, but the terbakky was the cash crop. It was a good education for me in what the real basis of life is.

They were Calvinist type people even then, and they've gotten more bat-crap right-wing crazy as they got older. Whenever I want to imagine the thinking of a hate-filled Rapture type, I envision my aunt and uncle and their son, who inherited the farm. Their daughters, the two who are still alive, are social misfits who did all kinds of drugs in the 60s, have had numerous marriages and psychiatric freak-outs, and now get by through welfare and grubbing through garbage bins. This, from a family that sees itself as representatives of the righteous people.

That said, I still get along with Uncle Oscar and Aunt Jean. Last saw them in March 2008 at my dad's funeral service. We discuss the weather, family members, what life is like in Oz (they are surprisingly well-traveled, and have even been here) and mostly non-political things. They refrain from telling me how I'm going to hell, and I refrain from telling them what complete fucking asses they are. Such are the bonds of blood.

Ah, the life you could have lived, Bukko! To think you walked away from all that...

To invert the title of the great surf-rock tune from The Ventures, my choice was "Run, Don't Walk" away from it...
