Disassembling Absurdity

Bush responds to Amnesty International claims of prisoner abuse at Guantanamo Bay, using the word "absurd" ten times:

"It's an absurd allegation. The United States is a country that promotes freedom around the world," he said, adding: "We've investigated every single complaint against the detainees. It seemed like to me they based some of their decisions on the word of — and the allegations by — people who were held in detention, people who hate America, people that had been trained in some instances to disassemble — that means not tell the truth. And so it was an absurd report."

Actually, George, the word is DISSEMBLE. But never mind...

What's absurd is for a man in Bush's position to publicly condemn these prisoners as guilty terrorists, when they have not even been accorded the most basic legal rights to defend themselves. Indeed, the charges against them have not even been laid out.

What's absurd is Bush's off-hand dismissal of allegations that have been very carefully assembled from multiple sources over many months.

But what's really absurd is that half the USA will take Bush's word as gospel.
