Is anyone in the USA ever going to acknowledge that Hugo Chavez enjoys the support of 80% of Venezuelans and has been democratically elected twice? This New York Review of Books article is certainly not a positive sign.

Is anyone on the left going to acknowledge that Hussein got 100% of the vote and was "democratically elected" for 30 years? Oh wait, that's because he threatened everyone who thought of voting against him. While this may not be the case with Chavez, there's certainly plenty that points to economic threats against citizens opposing the dictator. Remember, no one thought any of the Latin dictators in the 80's were evil until homegrown revolutions were aided by Reagan and brought the communist satellites down.

Well said, Exadios.

I guess Jeremy (like the NY reviewer) finds the idea of a leader who sings and reads poetry totally bizarre, even though a leader who can't speak English and doesn't know what's going on within his own administration is fine, apparently...

This widespread US fear-mongering idea that every left-wing government in the world is a "communist satellite" is just the biggest bag of horse-dung that ever was.

People across Lating America have SUFFERED for decades under right-wing, pro-US dictatorships of one kind or another. Why shouldn't they feel free to give left-wing governments a try? Isn't it THEIR decision what sort of government they want, just as it's up to the Iraqi's to choose whatever form of government THEY want?

What exactly are people in the USA so afraid of? Ghosts and monsters, smoke and mirrors...
