US and Australia agreed to abandon Geneva Conventions:

"Australian lawyer Major George O'Kane helped draft a letter which said some prisoners would not be protected by the Geneva Convention.

The December 24 letter said the US Army took the legal view that 'where absolute military security so requires, security internees will not obtain full Geneva Convention protection'.

The letter was signed by the officer in charge of the Abu Ghraib prison, Brigadier General Janis Karpinski."
