"Islamofascism", the view from abroad:
Islamic radicals, President George Bush said in a hard-hitting speech on Thursday, are trying to “enslave whole nations and intimidate the world”, which was why he was not going to cut and run in Iraq. That's from Pakistan's Daily Times, which - you gung-ho US idiots should realize by now - is read by a whole lot of people in your alleged "ally" Pakistan (never mind the ruler is a military dictator).
Bush said that while the recent bombings in London and Sharm al-Sheikh appeared random, they serve a clear ideology, “a set of beliefs that are evil but not insane” that he called Islamo-fascism, a new coinage... [new to anyone who doesn't read right-wing US blogs, obviously]
The president rejected criticism that the war in Iraq was fuelling terrorism, arguing that there were no American troops in Iraq on September 11, 2001. He once again, quite erroneously, appeared to have tried to establish a link between the 9/11 attacks and Iraq when no such evidence has so far been produced in favour of this view...
South Africa's News24 headlines a very similar story "Bush: War hasn't boosted terror" as if inviting readers to realise that well, yes, it has boosted terrorism (as everybody in the world is well aware).
Canadians focussed on the allegations of ten Al-Quadea terrorist plots detected, including at least three directly aimed at the USA. Anybody got any more detail on that info? Hmmn? {UPDATE: The White House later released details which include... wait for it!... José Padilla].
Of course, there remain pockets of resistance in the USA as well. For those who care, the Village Voice reminds us of a Bush speech to the very same National Endowment for Democracy (Ronald Reagan building) audience two years ago:
The failure of Iraqi democracy would embolden terrorists around the world, increase dangers to the American people, and extinguish the hopes of millions in the region. Iraqi democracy will succeed - and that success will send forth the news, from Damascus to Teheran-that freedom can be the future of every nation. (Applause.) The establishment of a free Iraq at the heart of the Middle East will be a watershed event in the global democratic revolution. (Applause.)

Bush using Islamofascist sounds as desperate as when the far right are bandying the term, only more so because he's the Prez. I think it is a call to his core freak constituents. Trying to explain Iraq off by making it seem like it was as important as fighing WW2 and hoping to conflate it with the fight against AQ.
When the whole story comes out ... when the American public finally understands who and what is behind Al Q'aeda ... will they finally come to realize just WHO is trying to “enslave whole nations and intimidate the world”?
One can only hope!
