Some of the best land in Australia is currently tenanted by the Defence Dept, for example the beautiful headlands at Watsons Bay and Balmoral Beach in Sydney, which would make fine national parks.
These land tenures are a residue from older wars where a sea-borne invasion was considered a real threat. Nowadays the land could be put to some much better purpose. Maybe Peter Garrett should get involved here?
