By Their Deeds...

Another strong dose of irony (or is that the stench of hypocrisy?) as the USA tries to send some of those embarrassing Gitmo detainees back to their home countries:
The US is also trying to persuade a European country to accept at least 15 Chinese Uigurs - a Muslim ethnic group with a large population in western China - and two Uzbeks ready to be released, but who will not be returned to their home countries for fear they might be abused or tortured, the official said.
Got that? We can't send Uzbeks back to Uzbequistan, even though Rummy's private torture jet flies detainees out there for "rendered" torture sessions. And we've gotta protect Muslim ethnic minorities... but only in China! And yet, in spite of all that, we can't let these people stay in the USA, so we've gotta dump them somewhere in "Old Europe".

And just what is the point of all this "send them home" action anyway? The US still plans to keep around a hundred prisoners in Gitmo more or less forever, presumably with nothing like a fair and legal trial:
The US expects to reduce the prison population from about 510 to about 100 prisoners considered to be a security risk. They would be held indefinitely, or until the "end of hostilities" in the global struggle against terrorism, a US official said.
PS: The same article also reveals that the USA has an "ambassador at large for war crimes" with the unlikely name of Pierre Prosper.

I vote for "hypocrisy" over "irony".
