Reasons To Be Cheerful?

This little excerpt from Gore's speech today is worth further investigation for those who don't know the full story:
Some of our traditional allies have been shocked by these new practices on the part of our nation. The British Ambassador to Uzbekistan - one of those nations with the worst reputations for torture in its prisons - registered a complaint to his home office about the senselessness and cruelty of the new U.S. practice: "This material is useless - we are selling our souls for dross. It is in fact positively harmful."
Craig Murray, Great Britain's former ambassador to Uzbekistan, was fired for criticizing the US and UK's hypocritical practice of outsourcing torture to "friendly" totalitarian governments.

Murray first raised his concerns in internal memos, then went public when they were ignored. You can now find his memos posted at his website: http://www.craigmurray.co.uk/

As the informed reader who sent me this link said, it's reassuring that someone high in government cares about this kind of sh*t. Of course, I can't help thinking that that's why they sent him to bloody Uzbequistan in the first place. It's the real sleaze-bags who get the top jobs, like Ambassador to the UN.

Non-related breaking news: Alito's confirmation has been delayed for one week.
