Meanwhile, Back In Gitmo...

Bush supporters are waking up today to hear that at least 7 former Gitmo detainees have "gone back to terrorism". Well, that just proves that we did the right thing locking them all up, doesn't it?

Never mind that they were released because there was zero proof that they had ever even been involved in terrorism! To be honest, I would surprised if the number of ex-detainees who have become actively involved in anti-US activism (as opposed to terrorism) was not a whole lot more than seven (over 200 have now been released, including 56 "transfers").

But look what I've just done - I've allowed Karl Rove to "frame" the story for me! The real story is that 549 detainees from around 40 countries are still being held in Gitmo, while their basic human rights are overshadowed by a "bewildering array of reviews and court challenges".

These include the farcical US military tribunals. 180 tribunals have been held and decisions have been reached in 96 cases. All but one have been confirmed as enemy combatants.

There are also the farcical US military commissions, also widely criticised as totally inadequate. So far only four detainees have been charged under this system.
