Via the Guardian:
'To out a CIA operative for political reasons is just unbelievable. This hurts the intelligence community which is supposed to be protecting us. I hope Rove rots in hell.' - Larry Johnson, a former CIA agent who is a former colleague of Plame's.
'It actually worked. It was aimed at stopping the bleeding after Wilson spoke out and no one else did.' - Mel Goodman, a former top CIA analyst now at the Center for International Policy.
In the NYT, Frank Rich nails the big picture, explaining that this case is not really about Wilson or Plame or Fitzgerald or even Rove:
It is about the president of the United States. It is about a plot that was hatched at the top of the administration and in which everyone else, Mr. Rove included, are at most secondary players...This is the message that needs to get through to the US voting public.
This case is about Iraq, not Niger. The real victims are the American people, not the Wilsons. The real culprit - the big enchilada, to borrow a 1973 John Ehrlichman phrase from the Nixon tapes - is not Mr. Rove but the gang that sent American sons and daughters to war on trumped-up grounds and in so doing diverted finite resources, human and otherwise, from fighting the terrorists who attacked us on 9/11.
