A review of White House records has determined that George J. Tenet, then the director of central intelligence, did brief Condoleezza Rice and other top officials on July 10, 2001, about the looming threat from Al Qaeda, a State Department spokesman said Monday. But the records also show that Rice urged Tenet to make the same presentation to Rumsfeld and Ashcroft.
But Mr. Ashcroft said by telephone on Monday evening that he never received a briefing that summer from Mr. Tenet.Hmmn. That still does not explain why the Rice-Tenet meeting was not included in the 9/11 Commission's report. And if Rice did nothing else after making this recommendation - and then lied to cover up the meeting - she is far from off the hook.
It looks like the big fish in the Bush pond are finally playing the Blame Game in earnest. In today's NYT, Paul Krugman says "the right-wing coalition that has spent 40 years climbing to its current position of political dominance may be cracking up." Let's hope he is right.
But don't hold your breath waiting for these people to do the honourable thing and resign - these guys are only going to go down screaming and dragging the whole planet with them, if they can.
