Do These GOP Fools Swallow Their Own Shit?

This stuff shouldn't come as a surprise to any intelligent readers, but it's worth knowing your enemy. OK, class is now in session...

Back in 1987, a bunch of conservatives headed by someone called L. Brent Bozell III set up a GOP media pressure group, which nowadays claims to be "the largest media watchdog organization in America". It is called the Media Research Center. Go take a look. It's scary stuff.

Probably their best-known "division" is TimesWatch.org, which aims to document and expose the (ahem!) "liberal political agenda of the New York Times". Anything even remotely anti-GOP turns up in the NYT, these guys are all over it with cyber alerts and orchestrated protests.

But they also have another very strange division called the Free Market Project, which lobbies on behalf of Big Business. Among the media "myths" these guys expose are things like "Networks Link Global Warming to Increase in Hurricanes" and "NY Times and AP Portray Shopping Season As So-So At Best". What about "Econ 101: How Do Tax Cuts Work? - Despite the media’s portrayal, tax cuts ‘for the rich’ aren’t bad – and they boost the economy."

How do you defeat such a well-organized, well-financed enemy? Maybe the key thing here is conviction. Before the Berlin Wall came down, Sting was singing "I hope the Russians love their children too". Turns out the Russians did love their children, and had the sense and courage to bring them towards a better future. But what about these US Conservatives? Do they love their children too? Do they really believe their own lies and propaganda, or is it just a case of "Business Is Business"? You know: "just doing my job".

It just may be that the best chance we have of defeating Bush is if his own GOP machine implodes. We already have a whole network of GOP scandals interlinking, while a whole squawking flock of economic, diplomatic, political and military chickens are coming home to roost. Some of the less ideologically-blinded GOP supporters are starting to see the writing on the wall, realising they have been sorely duped, and understanding that BushWorld is not really the kind of place where they want to live. The question is, will they now help make the world a better place?

For their children, maybe?

BTW: why does the fact that these MRC guys are headquartered in Alexandria, VA. sound familiar? I'm sure I've seen that city on another GOP URL just recently...
