Bush Tortured By GOP Vote In US Senate

In a story that is being widely under-reported right now - bombs on the subway in New York! Squawk! - the US Senate voted 90-9 to enact a ban on torture. This was the biggest Senate defeat for Bush & Co ever, and came after weeks of heavy lobbing from the Bush team.

The anti-torture legislation calls on the Pentagon to set strict standards for the interrogation of prisoners and to prohibit their "cruel, inhumane or degrading" treatment. It was sponsored by Republican senator and Vietnam prisoner of war, John McCain, and all but nine GOP Senators supported him, in open defiance of the Bush cadre.

Astonishingly, Bush is still threatening to veto the motion.
