Michael Schwartz and Tom Engelhardt explain:
Not long after Baghdad fell to American troops, it was already apparent that the United States was part of the problem, not part of the solution, in Iraq; and that, as long as the American military occupied the country, matters would just get worse. Every passing month has only predictably confirmed that reality...This is a lengthy article and well worth a read if you are interested in this important topic.
It is now a commonplace in Washington to point out that the Bush administration had no exit strategy from Iraq, but to this day few bother to say the obvious: It had no exit strategy because its top officials never planned on or expected to leave that country...
The future, by definition, is unknown and so open to the unexpected. Nonetheless, it is far more reasonable, based on what we now know, to assume that if the U.S. were to leave Iraq quickly, the level of violence would be reduced, possibly drastically, not heightened. Here are the four key reasons:
1. The U.S. military is already killing more civilian Iraqis than would likely die in any threatened civil war;
2. The U.S. presence is actually aggravating terrorist (Iraqi-on-Iraqi) violence, not suppressing it;
3. Much of the current terrorist violence would be likely to subside if the U.S. left;
4. The longer the U.S. stays, the more likely that scenarios involving an authentic civil war will prove accurate.

ohmygod, that article was such a belaboured way to express the most obvious, while giving us still yet more crap about zarqawi, who most likely exists on computers at CentCom or the CIA. The Z-man is so good and evil he can take on the US and al Sadr, too--and he's so stupid he would want to. It's garbage like this that means there never will be a coherent anti-war movement in the US. That article and Juan Cole stink enormously, though insofar as they are anti-war, they can go do what other people do--protest, and tell stupid misinformed people to shut the f- up.
Luke,
Are you really a Commodore? Do you guys still do gigs? Can you get me Lionel Richie's autograph?
Sorry, but it's hard to get a grip on your comment: "the most obvious" would be an immediate withdrawal? "Stupid misinformed people" would be the pro-Bush crowd?
Am I supposed to be this confused???
Yo Luke: that slide guitar solo near the end of "I'm Easy" has to be the cheesiest thing ever recorded, mate! but it's beautiful!
Yeah, I also believe this is an important subject but please treat it as strictly hypothetical. There ain't gonna be no withdrawal from Iraq unless we can empty Washington -- and all the corridors of power elsewhere -- of all the Republicans and about 95% of the so-called Democrats. Tarred, feathered and ridden out of town on a rail. Then and only then can we start talking about what's the best way to get out of Iraq.
